Oakland University Golden Grizzlies

The University of Michigan men's basketball team, ranked 25th, will close its opening week of the 2017-18 season when it hosts Oakland at the University Center on Saturday, November 3. Youngstown State continues its 2020-21 season and hosts Oakland to continue its home-and-home series with the Penguins and Golden Grizzlies, who will play the first of three game series between the two schools on Friday, December 14 at 7 p.m. at Youngster Center for the third time in four years.

The OU men's basketball team is coached by Greg Kampe, who is now the longest-serving coach in NCAA Division I history. He was an assistant under Tom Izzo at Michigan State University when they won the NCAA title in 2000, and is now a member of his alma mater's coaching team. Parsons has coached in Oakland for 28 years and has amassed 363 victories and made it to the tournament several times in his coaching career, as well as head coach for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and Oakland City College.

The Golden Grizzlies rejoined Division I in 1998, when they rejoined the Mid-Continent Conference, now known as the Summit League. The team advanced to Division 1 in the 2006-07 season and won the national championship against Penn State University 5-1. Oakland won both the MVP and the NL in 2011. The Kings won the NFC East's first regular-season tournament for the second consecutive year and again got a 14-seeded team into the tournament, the first time in school history. After the 2011-12 season, the conference changed its name to Summit League and the Golden Grizzles began to establish themselves as the league's top program.

The Penguins led the 2012-13 Horizon League in goals-against average (3.1) and points-per-game (14.2) and had the third-best mark in the country.

Coach John Barnes leads 10-6 against Oakland, the Penguins lead the series 13-12 Oakland scored 28 points in the first 7: 30 of the game and led 45-34 at halftime, but the margin was at least nine throughout the second half. YSU caught the Golden Grizzlies, who have won four of their last five games and six of seven overall.

In 2018, the men's team has won 40 consecutive conference meetings, including all four Mountain West Conference championship teams.

Oakland has resumed its path to the NCAA tournament by winning the Summit League Tournament in 2013 and 2014, as well as the Mountain West Conference regular title in 2014 and 2015. In 2010, Oakland entered the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) for the first time ever, having won its second consecutive title and first since 2010. Oakland University has won four consecutive conference titles in men's and women's basketball and four of the last five conference titles. The league surpasses the NCAA average in all 19 sports, including men's basketball, for both men and women. There are 16 teams with a 12-1 record in the conference and 10-0 record in NCAA tournaments.

Chelsea Olson was named First Team All-Horizon League and will continue to raise her game in 2019-20. She and classmate Malia Magestro were both in the starting lineup for the first time this season, making them only the second pair of true freshmen to start in a season opener since YSU in the 2001-02 Horizon League.

Milt Baron and Harold Lautner moved the future campus to its current location north of Deer Lake on Adams Road. George Karas was the first president of the Oakland University Board of Trustees, and the university opened its first building on the site at the corner of Adams and Lake Street. The building was completed in 1963 and in 1964, men's cross country became the first intercollegiate sport to be offered in Oakland.

Oakland left the Summit League to join the Horizon League, and Perry was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round (13th overall) of this year's MLS SuperDraft.
